Exeter After School Jiu Jitsu

After-hours martial arts provision at schools in the Exeter area

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a self defence martial art and sport, similar to Judo. There is no striking, like in karate or boxing. Instead, practioners employ wrestling, positional control and submission holds to defend themselves and control their opponent. Therefore they can defend themselves physically without being hurt OR hurting their attacker.

BJJ has gained incredible popularity in recent years due to this lack of striking. Because students aren’t hitting each other, it can be practised at a much higher intensity than most other martial arts. Students get immense satisfaction from practising the techniques that they have learned against their resisting training partners, “sparring” jiu-jitsu at the end of most training sessions. For this reason, BJJ has moved beyond self-defence to becoming a full-fledged sport with a flourishing competition scene.

Benefits of Jiu-Jitsu

We believe that by joining our sessions, your child will:

Gain Confidence

We work to reduce bullying and teach our students to the basic techniques that may keep them safe during confrontation. In our experience, this has improved the confidence of our students and that alone has reduced the moments of confrontation they face.

Be Safe

Our experienced coaches make sure that students feel safe the whole time. Wrestling and finding yourself in bad positions is a part of the sport, but we believe that resiliance is built through knowing that your coaches are looking out for your safety during those hard moments.

Stay Fit & Healthy

Jiu-Jitsu is an active, problem solving sport that exercises both the body and the mind. It is a throughly effective and fun way to improve ones fitness and strength. We consider it to be one of the more fun and egaging ways to exercise.

Make Friends

Jiu-Jitsu is always done with training partners and builds comraderienwithin the group. We regularly remind our students that if we want to improve, we must also be improving our training partners by working together.

Have Fun

ost importantly, we work to make our sessions fun and engaging. This is often the our students first experience of martial arts and we want it to be something they will remember fondly in later life and hopefully plant the seed of the importance of sport, fitness, self defence and play.

“All three of my kids (ages 5-11) love this class and can’t wait to go each week. They enjoy everything from the warm up to the sparring. I would highly recommend!”
